So you're thinking about writing us some content?

Firstly, we LOVE this for you. Get in touch! But before you do, here’s some advice about pitching to us. We’re essentially interested in content that is B.A.S.I.C:

If you’re worried you’re going in too hard on Jeff Bezos, please fear not. The editorial team are here to advise on making your content accessible whilst still getting your unadulterated POV out there. Don’t worry about stifling yourself early doors or trying overly hard to make it the funniest thing the world has ever seen – this will come in good time, and we won’t share anything until we’re happy that it’s in the best shape it can be. Go wild, and we’ll advise you on reining it in if you’re being unduly horrible…if it’s to someone who doesn’t deserve it.

Humour famously doesn’t age so well. Nor does ‘breaking news’. So time is absolutely of the essence. If you’re writing about something that has recently happened, we’ll do our best to prioritise sharing it whilst it’s still trending or at least relevant. In the same vein, we ask that you think carefully about who your content criticises. We are interested in punching up and challenging systems of structural oppression, and not so much in @ing whichever influencer has had the most recent Twitter fallout.

This is a comedy platform, so don’t be afraid to be tongue in cheek or play with ~tone~. We have had multiple contributors write in character before, so adopting a persona is definitely on the cards, and it’s totally up to you how you’d like your work to be credited too.

The material should be well-researched, and contain links to sources for any Bold claims that are made (NB: bold claims are absolutely to be encouraged, and anything from a reputable online source will work). If you’ve got unsubstantiated content, we have a research editor on board to help make your case stronger – but please, do your research and make her job easier, or you might receive a pass-agg email or two.

We are very open to different formats! If you want to write a poem or short story, draw comics or illustrations or make video content, we are very happy to be flexible to your particular needs. If you have a very specific set of skills, just let us know and we’ll do our best to utilise them.

Once received, your work will be shared with the editor and research editor, who will return the draft to you with edits for your approval. If you and the team are all happy, this version will then be posted on the blog. If you would like to make further edits, or dispute some of the team’s edits, then there is always scope for further conversations and drafts of the material. We will not make any major edits to your work without running them by you first. You will be credited on the blog with the name, photo and bio that you provide us with, and will be included on our writers page.

Finally:

  • Please include any photos or illustrations you would like to be shared alongside your content. These must either be your own (if you’re happy to share), or from a free source such as Canva, Pexels, etc. Don’t worry if these are not sourced for your first draft, as this can be addressed later. If you do not include any visuals and do not specify that you would not like any to be included, the editor will choose images as they see fit.
  • Please include a photo and short bio (2-3 sentences) about who you are. Let us know if you’d like us to include links to any personal websites or social media accounts too.
  • Swearing is permitted, but try to use it only for specific effect where absolutely flipping necessary. Same goes for explicit content.
